Meet Theithei Luithui, a contemporary Tangkhul singer, songwriter, and composer whose music is a soulful journey through the landscapes, history, and folklore of her people. With deeply poetic lyrics that range from themes of love, solitude, and resilience, to environmental consciousness and the beauty of ordinary life, Theithei's work speaks to the heart and mind.
Early Beginnings:
Music has always been a part of Theithei’s life. Growing up in a family where her father, a writer and composer, nurtured her love for melody, she was encouraged to sing in churches and social gatherings from an early age. Influenced by legendary artists like Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Bon Jovi, and Deep Purple, Theithei’s childhood was filled with music sessions with uncles and cousins who shared their love for rock, country, and folk.
Her formal musical education began at the Bangalore School of Music, where she discovered the magic of classical music. This dual passion for both traditional and modern sounds became the foundation of her music.
What Sparks Her Creativity:
For Theithei, inspiration is drawn from the folklore and history of her people, the Tangkhul community. The tragic past, the beauty of tradition, and the powerful stories of resilience fuel her creativity. Her love for different genres of music also plays a huge part in shaping her sound.
Facing Challenges:
One of her biggest challenges? Language barriers. While her songs resonate with the heart of her community through the use of Tangkhul (her native language), it has been tough to break into the commercial market. But, for Theithei, staying true to her roots and expressing her deepest thoughts in Tangkhul is non-negotiable. It’s where she feels most connected to her people’s story.

Balancing Art & Business:
When asked about balancing the artistic and commercial side of music, Theithei admits, "I sing for the love of music." She confesses that she hasn’t yet given much attention to the business side, but is determined to focus on it in the future.
Unforgettable Moments:The 2017 Tribute Concert for Akui, a Tangkhul rock legend, remains a deeply emotional and unforgettable experience. The Town Hall was packed to the brim, and as Theithei performed, the crowd sang along with such passion that it felt as if Akui himself was still with them. That night, Theithei was reminded of the power of music to keep stories—and legacies—alive.
Connecting with Fans:Social media and music platforms like Spotify and YouTube are Theithei's bridge to fans across the world. It’s through these channels that she shares her music and connects with listeners who share her love for heartfelt, meaningful songs.
Collaborations:
Over the years, Theithei has collaborated with some of the best in the industry, including Guru Rewben Mashangva, Ngathingpam Tangvah, and Featherheads. These collaborations have been wonderful learning experiences, allowing her to explore new genres and expand her musical horizons.
Influence of Her City:
Born and raised in Ukhrul, a place with rich traditions and a vibrant culture, Theithei’s art is deeply influenced by the town’s stunning landscapes and the stories of struggle, survival, and strength of her people. Ukhrul’s past, its beauty, and its people are ever-present in her music.
Advice for New Artists:
Theithei’s advice for aspiring musicians? "Don't ever give up on your dreams, no matter how long it takes. There is no such thing as a shortcut to success."
What’s Next for Theithei?
Currently working on new local songs that are set to be released in August 2025, Theithei is also working on a cover of her all-time favorite, Joan Baez’s "Diamonds and Rust." There’s much more music to come, as she continues her journey of creation and self-expression.
